Description
The war memorial in Powderham was erected after 1918 and is made of light grey granite. It features a chamfered cross on a tapering chamfered shaft, which rises from a hexagonal collar on a square plinth that sits on a stepped hexagonal base. The names of the fallen are inscribed in black relief lettering on the base and the step on the west side of the memorial. The memorial is enclosed by small granite bollards.
On the west face of the plinth, there is a granite plaque that reads: "In grateful memory of those who gave their lives in the Great War 1914-1919 and especially of (9 names) 1935-49 (4 names)."
This memorial is important as it serves as a focal point for memorial services and reminds the community of the human cost of conflict. It is associated with other listed memorials and buildings, and its simple yet elegant design is well executed. The memorial was also added to after 1945.
