Description
Lower Farmhouse is a possible longhouse that has been adapted into a farmhouse. It likely dates back to the late medieval period, with a byre incorporated into the dwelling around 1600. The building was subsequently enlarged, with the south end being rebuilt between the late 17th century and early 18th century, and it was restored in the late 20th century. The exterior features roughcast over rubble with some cob, and it has a half hipped thatched roof with brick stacks located to the left of the cross passage and right of the center.
The layout suggests it was originally a longhouse, consisting of two unequal rooms to the left of the cross passage. A fireplace has been inserted into the byre on the right, which has a stair turret or curing chamber adjoining on the rear elevation. There is a kitchen addition beyond this, along with a wash house addition at the rear. The building has one and a half storeys and features three 3-light casements rising from the eaves. The ground floor has three and four-light casements to the left of the entrance, and to the right, there are two 4-light casements and one 2-light casement. The entrance includes a studded plank door, and there is a right return plank door, which may date from the 17th century.
The interior has not been seen, but it is reported to contain two cruck trusses near the entrance, along with chamfered beams that have step and run-out stops in the cross passage. There is also an axial beam in the hall to the right with run-out stops. Some 18th-century raised and fielded panelled doors and a cupboard are located to the left of a curved hearth from the 18th century in the hall.
