Description

Wrexon Farmhouse is possibly a former longhouse that has been converted into a dwelling. It dates back to the 16th century, with the south gable end extended or rebuilt in the 17th to 18th centuries when it was adapted for domestic use. The north end underwent alterations in the 18th century, and the building was refenestrated in the late 19th to early 20th centuries. The structure features roughcast over cob, with some sections rebuilt in rubble, and has a slate roof with roughcast stacks.

The farmhouse has a plan that includes four cells and a cross passage, suggesting it was originally a longhouse with a byre end that was either rebuilt or extended into a three-cell and cross passage farmhouse. It stands two storeys high and has five bays, with a plinth on the four bays to the left. The wall breaks forward at the end bay on the right, and the central bays are partly rebuilt. The windows are mostly two and three-light casements, except for a small glazed opening above the gabled entrance porch. The rear elevation features pronounced recesses in the wall next to the rear entrance to the cross passage, and a three-light octagonal mullioned window.

Inside, the cob wall of the cross passage on the right rises through the roof. There is a later 18th-century brick fireplace inserted beyond the right side, a chamfered lintel over the cross passage fireplace, and a blocked oven against the facade wall. The interior also includes a peaked doorframe, a winder stair against the rear wall, a four-panel steeply chamfered compartment ceiling, and a stud and plank screen with an entrance that has been resited. A jointed cruck truss is visible above the stud and plank screen, and there are numerous changes in floor level on the upper floor that have not yet been satisfactorily explained.
