Description
Canonsgrove Farmhouse is a 16th-century farmhouse that was altered in the 17th century and later extended by one bay to the south. The building has a roughcast exterior over rubble and features a slate roof. It includes an extended stack on the left gable end, a brick stack to the left of the cross passage, and another brick stack on the right gable end with a projection for a bread oven. The farmhouse is designed in an L-plan, facing east, with three cells and a cross passage that has been enlarged by one bay to the south. There is also a two-cell kitchen wing to the northwest with a stair projection in the angle.
The structure is two storeys high and has four bays, with three-light casement windows. A late 17th-century casement window is located above the entrance in the second bay on the right. It is reported that a similar casement window survives at the rear, along with a 17th-century casement in the rear wing that retains its original glazing. Although the interior has not been seen, it is said to contain a stud and plank screen to the right of the cross passage, a panelled hall, and a timber-framed partition leading to the kitchen wing with a flat peaked door frame. Above the kitchen, there is a four-panel compartment ceiling featuring plasterwork cornices, moulded ribs, and angels' faces set in the centre of each panel. There is also evidence of a jointed cruck roof.
