Description
Higher Dipford Farmhouse is a farmhouse with an attached barn, dating from the 17th century. It was reroofed in the 19th century and underwent extensive alterations in the late 20th century. The building is rendered over cob and features a double Roman tile roof with a slight bell-cast. There are brick stacks located at the left gable end, to the right of the original cross passage, and at the junction with the outbuilding.
The farmhouse has a plan consisting of three cells and a cross passage, although the interior has been altered, especially in relation to the adjoining barn. It is two storeys high with four bays and has 20th-century fenestration, including three and four-light casements. The entrance is a 20th-century door located in the second bay from the left. Inside, the cross passage has been removed, and there is a large bressumer beam across the gable end stack. The opening to the right features a chamfered lintel and a cambered head, leading to a winder stair. To the right of the original cross passage, there is a four-panel bellow chamfer compartment ceiling and framed partitions on the first floor, suggesting it may have originally been an open hall house, though the roof is not visible. The barn, which is rendered cob, is attached to the right and has a corrugated iron roof.
