Description
Dipford Farmhouse is a farmhouse that likely dates back to the 16th century and has been altered over time. It features a barn that is dated 1808, with the roof raised and modified in the mid-20th century. The exterior is rough cast over cob and rubble, with left quoins, a slate roof, decorative ridge tiles, and bargeboards. There is an external stone-capped stack on the left gable and a rendered stack on the right gable end, as well as another stack between the third and fourth bays on the left. The building is L-shaped, although its evolution is not clear without an internal inspection.
The farmhouse has two storeys and consists of four bays on one side and one on the other, abutting the barn on the right. The windows are a mix of 20th-century fenestration, including 2 and 3-light casements. The second bay on the left features a 6-panel door with a fanlight, while the fourth bay has a 20th-century plank door with a side-light. There is also a loft door on the gable end of the barn, which has a corrugated iron roof and is dated 1808, attributed to Robert Mattock. At the rear, there is an outshot.
Although the interior has not been seen, it is reported to contain a 6-panel compartment ceiling with hollow chamfered beams. There is a lateral bead over the cross passage, suggesting that this was not the original entrance, and another 6-panel hollow chamfered beams ceiling in the center. The lack of other datable features and the largely rebuilt roof indicate significant alterations over the years.
