Description

Oaktrow Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the late 15th century, with alterations made in the late 16th and early 17th centuries, the 19th century, and a restoration in the late 20th century. The exterior is roughcast over a rubble and cob base, with a slate roof. It features a large external rendered stack at the right gable end, along with stone and partially rendered stacks at the end of the left bay and between the second and third bays on the left side. Originally, it may have been an open hall house, later ceiled to create a three-cell plan with a cross passage containing a winder stair. A rear wing was reroofed to match the main range, with a subsequent addition on the northwest side and a southeast addition. The farmhouse is two storeys high with five bays, each containing 20th-century wooden casements. The main entrance is in the second bay from the right, featuring a 20th-century door and a segmental headed gabled porch with a lean-to roof. To the left is a porch in an angle, with an attached single-story wing with a corrugated iron roof and a reset and altered 17th-century studded plank door. Inside, the right side of the house features steeply chamfered beams without stops, while others are chamfered with scroll stops. The winder stair is located behind the cross passage, rising beneath a jointed cruck truss. The roof elsewhere appears to have been rebuilt, likely with collar beam trusses. A peaked door frame leads to the rear wing. Although not inspected internally, it is reported to contain an octagonal wooden mullioned window. The history and use of the farmhouse's rooms are speculated upon.
