Description
Higher Bableigh Farmhouse is a farmhouse that dates back to the 16th century or earlier, with extensions made in the late 18th century and alterations in the 19th and 20th centuries. The building is constructed of whitewashed rendered stone and cob, topped with scantle slate roofs that have gable ends at two different heights, the left end being higher. The right end features a corrugated iron roof. There is a brick stack at the left gable end and two lateral stacks at the front, with the left side stack having offsets. The farmhouse has a three-cell through-passage plan that has been extended or rebuilt at the lower end. It is two storeys high and has a five-window range. The left end features a horned 20-paned sash window above a similar hornless sash. The other four openings have four-paned horned sashes, with the right end having a gabled half dormer. On the ground floor, there are two lean-to porches flanking the left lateral stack, with a hall window built out in line with the stack and a slated lean-to canopy above it. There is a half-glazed two-panelled door leading to the left side porch. At the rear lower end, there is a two-storey extension with a monopitch roof, which has a rubble stack with offsets and a tall brick shaft. The interior has not been inspected, but it is said to contain early oak panelling that is cased in.
