Description

SS 54 SE EAST DOWN

2/1 Bowden Farmhouse - II

Farmhouse, C16 or earlier, with late C18 dairy and C19 kitchen extensions to rear. Rendered shale with some cob. Slate roof with lateral gable ends and gable end brick stack. Slate-hanging on wall at lower end of C19 extension. 3 cell plan with cross-passage, now blocked, possibly originally open hall, now 2 storeys. Lower end has 2 inserted C20 casements above plain door to left and C20 porch to cross-passage doorway. To right 2 C20 inserted casements to each side of large lateral stack rendered and heightened with off-sets and pronounced lean. French window at upper end with 2 C20 dormer windows above. Former jetty, evidenced by plastered downstand construction, suggests an open hall. First floor and roof not inspected.
