Description

Upcott Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the 16th century, with alterations and extensions made in the 17th century, and refenestration occurring in the late 18th century. It is constructed of stone rubble and cob, which is colourwashed except for the gable and stacks, and features slate roofs. The building is now two storeys tall and was originally designed with a three-room and cross passage plan, possibly including an open hall. It is reported to have smoke-blackened roof timbers from 1864, although these could not be inspected. A plaque on the gable stack at the upper end, marked GR1672, may indicate the date of floor insertion and the addition of an outshut to the rear. The lower end of the farmhouse may have been rebuilt and includes a 17th-century extension that is at right angles to the front. There are large stone rubble stacks at all three gable ends and a tall brick stack on the front wall. The hall facade features three ground floor timber sash windows with glazing bars, each having eight panes per sash, and the left side has tripartite sashes. Above, there are two additional sashes with glazing bars, also with eight panes per sash. A 20th-century porch has been added.
