Description

Lean is a farmhouse dating from the late 17th century or early 18th century, with extensions made in the early to mid-18th century to the northwest and further alterations to the rear in the mid-19th century. The building is constructed of rubblestone, rendered on the southwest front and partly slate hung at the rear. It features a rag slate roof on the front slope with hipped ends, while the rear has an asbestos slate roof on a catslide. The hipped projecting wings at the back have scantle slate roofs.

There is a large, projecting rubblestone stack with granite quoins and a brick shaft on the left-hand hipped end, along with a stone stack to the left of center and a brick stack on the right. The layout likely began as a two-room plan with a central cross passage, later extended on the left-hand gable end and to the rear, adding a kitchen and dairy in the early and mid-19th century.

The farmhouse is two storeys high with an asymmetrical four-window front. On the ground floor, there are two early 20th-century three-light casements to the left, a panelled door with a mid-19th-century gabled porch made of rubblestone and a steeply pitched slate roof, a decorative granite chamfered arch, and ornate barge boards. To the right, there is a 19th-century three-light casement with glazing bars. On the upper floor, there are an early 20th-century three-light casement, two 19th-century two-light casements, and one 19th-century three-light casement. The interior features later fireplaces, and the upper floor has not been inspected. The ground slopes down to the right.
