Description
Lower Town Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from around the 17th century, which was extended and remodeled in the late 18th century. The building is constructed of rubblestone, with slate hung on the southeast and southwest fronts and the southwest gable end. It features a cement-washed scantle slate roof with a gable end on the southeast range and a slightly lower slate roof on the southwest range, which has a hipped end. The roof continues to the rear in a catslide. There is a brick stack on the southeast gable end and at the junction of the two wings, along with a large rubblestone lateral stack with a slatestone string course on the rear of the southwest range.
The farmhouse has an 'L' shaped plan, single depth on the southeast and extended to double depth with a rear outshut on the southwest. It is two storeys high with a regular arrangement of two and three window fronts. The southeast range has a three-window front featuring two 4-pane sashes on the ground floor, flanking a central six-panelled door beneath a Roman Doric porch with a moulded cornice. Above, there are two 4-pane sashes flanking a central blocked opening. The southwest range has a two-window front, with a ground floor featuring a 12-pane sash without horns on the left and an open lattice-work porch to the right, alongside a partly glazed four-panelled door. Above, there are two 12-pane sashes without horns, with a decorative hood over the left-hand sash. In the hipped southwest end, there is a 12-pane sash on both the ground and first floors, with a decorative hood over the first-floor window. The interior has not been inspected.
