Description
Lower Bableigh is a farmhouse that has been converted into a house. It dates from the late 15th century to early 16th century and was remodeled in the 17th century, with further alterations in the 19th and 20th centuries. The building is constructed of painted rendered stone rubble and cob, with a slate roof that is partially hidden by an added parapet on the front range. There are brick stacks at the right end and at the gable end of the rear projection. The layout is T-shaped.
The late medieval front range has a single room on each side of the through-passage and may have originally extended further to the left, where an adjoining house now stands. In the 17th century, the room to the left, which was originally the hall, was floored over. A right-angled gabled dairy and kitchen extension was added in the late 18th or early 19th century. The building is two stories high and has a three-window range, with 20th-century windows.
There is a gabled slate roof over the porch, which features a half-glazed inner door. Inside, there is an ovolo moulded beam in the hall, and some dairy fittings remain intact. The right-hand wall of the through-passage is a solid cob partition that reaches the apex of the roof and shows no signs of smoke-blackening on the purlins it supports. In contrast, the left side over the hall features a single truss with short, slightly curved feet and a cranked collar that is morticed into the soffits of the principals, which are thoroughly smoke-blackened, as are the two tiers of threaded purlins it carries.
