Description
Tuckers is a cottage dating from the 16th to 17th century, with walls raised in the early 19th century. It features roughcast grooved as ashlar over rubble, a shallow pitch double Roman tile roof, and external brick stacks on the left gable end and to the left of the cross passage. The layout suggests it was possibly an open hall house, but it is now arranged as three cells with a 20th-century addition at the rear. The building has two storeys and irregular fenestration, with all windows being 3-light ovolo moulded mullioned types. There are two windows to the left and one above the entrance, along with two more to the left of the entrance, a small stair light to the left, one 3-light window to the right, and a stall leaded window beyond. The entrance features a shouldered Ham stone surround with a prison-style studded plank door that has a central light with a grill.
The interior, which has been extensively altered, may have originally included a lobby entry. It contains a large chamfered bressumer to the right, a chamfered lintel to the left of the entry, and a winder stair rising against the facade wall, an unusual arrangement also found at Fyrse Cottage across the street. Some jointed cruck trusses are present, closely spaced, along with a timber-framed partition on the first floor.
