PITMINSTER CP BLAGDON HILL Julia Cottage

GV II

Cottage. Probably C16, restoration dated 1837, refenestrated late C20. Roughcast, slate hung south gable end, double Roman tiled roof, half-hipped south gable end, pair of abutting roughcast stacks above entrance, one set below apex of roof. Plan: possibly gable entry 2-cell, enlarged one room left forming lobby entry, outshot at rear extended north as simple storey range linking Old School House(qv). One and a half storeys, 1:2 bays, all late C20 metal windows of poor, unsympathetic design, C20 door between first and second bays left, Hall stone plaque above inscribed "Julia Cottage 1837". Interior not accessible at time of survey, but thought to contain features of interest. 1837 was the date that Mrs Welman built the chapel (qv) and school house to the north. Julia Cottage, possibly named after one of her step-daughters, was perhaps the Manse or school master's house.
