Description

Julia Cottage is a cottage that likely dates back to the 16th century, with a restoration dated 1837 and later window changes made in the late 20th century. The exterior is roughcast with a slate-hung south gable end and a double Roman tiled roof that features a half-hipped south gable end. There are two roughcast stacks above the entrance, with one positioned below the apex of the roof. The building has a plan that may have originally included a gable entry and two cells, but it has been enlarged to create a lobby entry and an outshot at the rear that extends north, linking to the Old School House. The cottage is one and a half storeys tall with a layout of one to two bays, and it features late 20th century metal windows that are considered to be of poor and unsympathetic design. A 20th century door is located between the first and second bays on the left side, and there is a stone plaque above inscribed "Julia Cottage 1837." The interior was not accessible during the survey but is believed to contain features of interest. The year 1837 is significant as it marks the time when Mrs. Welman built the chapel and school house to the north. Julia Cottage may have been named after one of her step-daughters and could have served as the Manse or the school master's house.
