Description
Mychells Mead is a cottage that was originally two cottages, dating from the early 17th century, with alterations made in the 19th and 20th centuries. The building is timber-framed with a reversed assembly and is rendered, standing on a brick plinth. It features a half-hipped thatched roof with a red brick ridge stack. The cottage is one storey with an attic and has a three-unit plan. The entrance includes a boarded door in a lobby entry position, with a small bay window to the left and three other 20th-century casement windows. There are also two dormer windows with sloping roofs.
Inside, the cottage has been recently restored. The wall below the wall plate has been replaced, and three storey posts, which may date from the late 16th century, have been repositioned. The roof timbers, marked with short incised carpenter's marks, are likely from the 19th century and correspond to the insertion of the floor frames and the brick fronting of the chimney stack, which dates from the 17th century. The interior also features a 19th-century boxed staircase, some 18th and 19th-century doors, and a 19th-century pine chimney surround. The floor tiles have been relaid and are from the 19th century. Historical references include an estate map of the Manor of Glatton by John Hausted from 1613 and another estate map for William Wells from 1770.
