Description
The Old School House is a cottage that was enlarged to serve as a day and Sunday school and is now a dwelling. It likely dates from the 18th century and was enlarged in 1837. The building features roughcast over rubble, with the south-west gable end exposed. It has a steeply pitched double Roman tiled roof and a slate-roofed porch, along with a large central 18th-century brick chimney stack. The structure is L-shaped, originally a two-cell cottage oriented east-west, which was expanded with a south-west wing and a south-east porch. There is an outshut on the west front that continues as a single-storey range linking it to Julia Cottage to the south, with the east end facing the road.
The east end has a two-storey gable-fronted single bay with 16-pane sash windows featuring moulded architraves. To the left is a single-storey porch with a 3x5 pane fixed light window, and the entrance on the south front is through a gable porch with a Tudor arch head doorway and a 20th-century door. The gable end of the south-west wing has irregular fenestration, presumably for lighting the stairs. The north front overlooks the chapel and is lit only on the ground floor right with a 3-light casement window. The day and Sunday school was funded by the Welmans of Poundisford Park. The building is listed primarily for its historic interest as part of a group.
