Description

Mathews Farm House is a farmhouse, now a cottage, likely rebuilt in the 17th century from a medieval house. It has been refenestrated and altered in the late 20th century. The building is rendered over rubble and possibly cob, with a concrete tiled roof and rebuilt brick stacks set in from the left and right gable ends of the cross passage. The house has an L-plan layout with two cells and a cross passage. It is believed that the original open hall was ceiled, and a fireplace was added to the north gable end in the 17th century, along with a winder stair in the outshot at the rear of the southern room and the stack beside the cross passage. The house is two storeys high and has three bays, featuring all late 20th century windows and a central recessed door with a 20th century moulded surround. A large raking buttress is located on the south gable end at the junction with the outshot. Although the interior has not been seen, it is reported to contain a chamfered lintel above the fireplace in the north gable end, chamfered stone jambs, a curing chamber on the left, and winder stairs on the right, which have been rebuilt to extend over a bread oven. There are also chamfered beams with double steps, run-out stops, and scroll stops, a timber-framed partition to the cross passage, a chamfered peaked doorframe to the southern room, and a rear doorway that is almost flat peaked. The property has historical documentation dating back to 1489.
