Description

Knight's Farmhouse is a late medieval open hall house that was ceiled in the 17th century. The roof was raised later, and the building was refenestrated between the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It features roughcast over cob, with the right gable end rebuilt. The roof is covered with double Roman tiles, and there are brick stacks at the right gable end, as well as an external rubble stack with a rebuilt brick chimney on the rear elevation, rising below the roof ridge.

The farmhouse has a single-ended open hall plan with a solar that jetties out into the hall, ceiled to a three-cell layout with a cross passage. It stands two storeys tall and has four bays, all with three-light casements except for a small hinged casement above the entrance in the second bay on the right. There is a half-glazed 19th-century door and a 20th-century porch, along with a raking buttress on the right gable end and a window that formerly lit the stair.

Although the interior was not seen, it is said to contain evidence of an arch-braced jointed cruck truss roofed open hall, with a framed partition to the solar jettied into the hall that includes a small window. The hall features a nine-panel steeply chamfered compartment ceiling and an unusual plinth at the rear of the hall stack.
