Description
Church Gate Cottage is a cottage that was later extended to serve as a school and has now returned to being a cottage. It dates from the 17th century, with extensions made in the late 18th to early 19th centuries. The building is rendered and roughcast over rubble, featuring a thatched roof that is hipped at the curved east end and the lower west end, with brick stacks indicating the extent of the original dwelling.
The plan shows that the cottage backs onto the churchyard and is likely a two-cell structure with a cross passage. The entrance has been relocated to the curved addition at the east end. A large room has been added beyond the west stack, which includes a lower single-storey entrance bay. The east end features a curved two-light casement window with a plank door below it, along with a rustic wooden porch topped with a clay-tiled pentice hood.
The long left side of the cottage faces the road and has a plank door in the single-storey addition, with remnants of a wall nearby. There is a 19th-century four-light ovolo moulded mullioned and transomed window with herringbone leading to the right of the stack. Additionally, there are two early 19th-century leaded iron casements, similar to those below, flanked by two smaller glazed openings, with the end right one being from the 20th century. All windows have wrought iron supports for window boxes. The rear elevation is lit by only one tiny glazed opening. The interior has not been seen.
