Description

The Packhorse Inn is an inn dating from the late 17th century, with alterations made in the 18th century. It is constructed of rubble stone and features a Bridgwater tile roof, with a stack at the south end wall and one at the rear. The building has two storeys and a three-window range. The upper floor has recessed ovolo-moulded mullion windows with hoodmoulds, consisting of two three-light windows and one two-light window. The ground floor includes a door framed by a raised bead-moulded surround with a pediment on consoles, flanked by a pair of 12-pane sash windows in raised bead-moulded surrounds.

At the rear, there is a parallel range with end stacks, also two storeys high. The right side is set back and features a later 18th-century upper three-light flush cyma-moulded window. The left side has a two-window range of earlier 18th-century recessed cyma-moulded two-light windows, with hoodmoulds above the upper windows and a continuous hoodmould over the lower windows. There is a two-storey outbuilding made of rubble stone with an upper door on the left. A lean-to connects the main range to a rear stable building; the left side is early 19th century with two upper 16-pane sash windows, while the right side is 18th century with ashlar piers supporting three lower garages and upper two-light and three-light flush cyma-moulded windows. There is a door on the left with outside steps leading up. Inside the inn, there is a small Tudor-arched moulded stone fireplace on the south side and an early 18th-century panelled window seat at one of the front windows.
