Description

The Town Hall, built in 1882 by W.H. Bromley of Corsham, incorporates stonework from the 1784 Market Hall. It is constructed of ashlar stone with a slate roof, featuring coped gables and end wall stacks. The original building was a single storey with a central projection, displaying a 1-3-1 arrangement of large arches that included an impost band and keystones leading to an upper band, a blank attic, a moulded cornice, a parapet, and a central pediment adorned with the Methuen arms.

In its rebuilt form, the ground floor retains a similar design but now includes arched-headed glazing bar sashes set back in the original arches, along with a central arched-headed doorway featuring double doors and a fanlight, all framed by a heavy surround of clustered pilasters that support brackets for a balustraded balcony. The centre has been altered to display a relief portrait of Queen Victoria in an arched frame from 1897. The original upper band has been converted into a sill course for the upper recessed arched-headed glazing bar sashes, which also feature an impost band and keystones. The cornice, parapet, and central pediment include reused carved arms, with the date 1784 on the left and 1882 on the right.

The south side has an arched ground floor recess with a blocked 2-light window and one upper window that mirrors the main front. The north side and rear are made of small ashlar blocks, entirely from 1882.
