Description
No 1 Church Street is an 18th-century house and shop constructed from roughcast rubble stone with a stone tiled roof that is hipped at the north-west angle. It features an east end wall stack and wallface stacks at both the north-west and south-west angles. The building is two storeys high with an attic and has an 'L'-shaped plan.
The north front, facing Church Street, includes a hipped dormer, flush quoins at the north-west angle, a coved stone eaves cornice, and a two-window range. There are two upper 12-pane sash windows set in raised bead-moulded surrounds. The ground floor has a six-panel door with an overlight, which is framed by a chamfered surround topped with a pediment on brackets, and to the right is an early 19th-century sixteen-pane sash window.
The west front, facing High Street, has a similar cornice and two upper windows. The ground floor features an early 19th-century twelve-pane sash window and a 20th-century neo-Georgian shopfront, which includes a half-glazed door and a 12-pane shop window. In the rear angle of the building, there is an ashlar stair tower topped with a hipped tiled roof and a tripartite window with a configuration of 4-12-4 panes.
