Description
1 and 3 West Street is a corner hotel that has been converted into shops, dating from the early 19th century. It is constructed from limestone rubble with lower courses of Ham Hill stone and features a slate roof with brick stacks at the gable ends and right of center.
The building has a double-depth plan and stands three storeys high with a three-window range. The front has 8/8-pane sashes under wooden lintels at the second-floor windows, while the first floor features flat gauged arches. The north-east corner of the building is canted towards Hermitage Street and includes an eaves cornice at the front.
No. 3, located on the far right, has a 20th-century door with a modern shop window to its left. No. 1, to the left, features an 8/8-pane sash in the center and a six-panel door with a semi-circular fanlight set in a round arch in a set-back doorway to its left. To the left of this is a mid-19th-century projecting shop window with two rows of four panes. The canted bay at the corner has mid-19th-century double doors with a large overlight of two panes, and above this, in worn paint, are the words "DRAYTON'S TEMPERANCE HOTEL."
On the left return facing Hermitage Street, there is a late 19th-century two-over-two-pane sash window on the ground floor to the right, with two blind windows above and two-light casement windows to the left. The interior has not been inspected.
