Description
No. 17 on Hermitage Street is a shop with a dwelling, built in the mid-19th century. It features limestone rubble on a Ham Hill stone plinth and has a slate roof with stepped stone coping on the left gable end. The building has a double-depth plan and stands two storeys tall with a one-window range.
On the first floor, there is a three-light casement window with glazing bars positioned at eaves level. To the right, there is a stepped-back four-panel door with a curved top overlight, next to a central plate-glass shop window consisting of two lights with slightly curved tops, flanked by colonnettes and a panelled pilaster on the left. This arrangement is topped with a shop fascia that has a moulded cornice, which is painted with "Unitarian School Room," indicating the chapel located to the right of Nos. 19 and 19A. A plank door is located at the far left. The interior has not been inspected. This building is included for its group value.
