Description

Nos. 247 and 249 on Watling Street is a house that has been converted into two shops, likely built around 1852. The building features knapped flint with red brick dressings and has a tiled roof. It is designed in a T-plan and stands two storeys tall with a two-window front. There is a slightly projecting bay on the right side with a gable at the front. The ground floor has modern shopfronts added in the 20th century. On the first floor, there are three-light cast iron casements with Gothic-style glazing, slightly cambered heads, and drip moulds. A small gable is positioned above the left window. The eaves and gables display diagonally set brick courses. The right side of the building has steps leading up to a later entrance on the first floor. There is a stack towards the rear with a panelled shaft and decorative brickwork in the rear gable. The interior has not been inspected. This building is included for its group value.
