Description
Harper House, formerly known as Harperbury House, is a former country house built in 1871 by architect Richard Norman Shaw for solicitor John Oddie. The building features red brick construction, with part of the first floor tile-hung. It has tiled gabled roofs, with the main house showcasing heavily moulded, white-painted timber gable pediments. Originally, it had tall brick chimney stacks. The structure includes a two-storey main wing and a three-storey service wing, exhibiting irregular fenestration and an asymmetrical design.
The entrance features a pointed arch leading to a recessed doorway, with a transom and mullion window to the right. The first floor has four sash windows with a dog-tooth brick cill band. To the left, a recessed bay contains two ground floor sashes and a large stair window set back. The service block is tile-hung on the second floor, with transom and mullion windows on the ground floor, sash windows on the first floor, and casements on the second. The rear facade mirrors the front with similar gables, featuring four-light transom and mullion windows with cross top lights below. The ground floor includes a bay window and three similar lights to the right.
Inside, the house retains the original open well stair with turned balusters and newel finials, as well as a servants' stair with a column newel. There are several original 18th-century style fireplaces, two of which have overmirrors flanked by glass cases. This building is noted as an early and unusual example of Shaw's work, foreshadowing his later designs at Bedford Park.
