Description

Netherwylde Farm House is a house with early 16th century origins, which was rebuilt and extended in the mid 17th century. It underwent brick refronting in the late 18th century, with 19th century additions and 20th century alterations. The building features a timber frame, with brick walls at the front and sides, and rendering at the rear, topped with tiled roofs. Originally designed as a two-bay hall house, it was transformed into a double-ended, lobby entry house with a staircase wing at the rear.

The house has two storeys and an attic. The front entrance is located to the right of the hall range, featuring a 19th century brick and flint porch that conceals an earlier bracketed hood. The front also includes 20th century casement windows and dentilled brick eaves, with one hipped dormer on the left. A 17th century ridge stack on the right has a cruciform shape with oversailing caps and buttressing at the rear. The gabled cross wings project slightly forward and have 20th century glazing bar sashes with flat arched heads.

The right return is made of 20th century brick and includes a 19th or 20th century gabled projection. The left return features an extruded stack with offsets and a lean-to conservatory addition. At the rear, the cross wings extend further to the right, revealing exposed wall plates and purlins, along with 19th century stacks at the gable ends. There is a sash window in the staircase wing, although the stairs have been removed, and casements are found elsewhere. Two half dormers flank the central wing, with later lean-to additions. To the rear right, there is a 19th century single-storey dairy, rendered and topped with a hipped roof.

Inside, the ground floor features an ovolo moulded binding beam. A restored wall painting on the first floor ceiling in the right wing is dated 1662 and includes initials and ornamentation. The roof has clasped purlins, with curved braces to the tie beams and wind braces.
