Description
The Hansteads is a house that was originally built as a farmhouse, featuring a T-shaped plan with two units, one at right angles to the other. The front range has late medieval origins, while the rear range dates from the early 17th century. There is a late 19th-century addition on the left side of the front. The house has an exposed timber frame with red brick infill, and the rear wing is plastered. It has plain tile roofs and is two storeys high.
The front of the house features four sash windows, three of which on the right are from the early to mid-19th century and have wide flush wood frames. There is a six-fielded panel door with a canopy supported by consoles. The extension on the left is made of red brick and includes one recessed sash window and a square sash bay on the ground floor. The long rear range has four small casements on the south side, and on the east side, there are three sash windows and one casement. A dark red brick ridge stack with four square shafts is present, and the interior has heavy exposed beams.
Inside the front range, the bay next to the extension seems to have been an open hall, with the collar purlin of a crown post roof visible, and Wealden framing on the rear wall. The two bays on the right have a clasped purlin roof with slightly curved wind braces, and the ground floor features chamfered beams. In the rear center of the interior, there is a mid-17th-century staircase with slat balusters.
