Description
No. 53 on St John's Street is a house that now features a shop on the ground floor and storage above. It dates from the early 19th century but has an older core. The front is made of painted brick, while the interior is timber-framed, topped with a stone slate roof.
The building has two storeys and attics, with a three-window range. The first storey has 16-pane sash windows, and there are two flat-headed dormers, each with two-light small-paned casement windows. On the ground floor, there are two 19th-century shop fronts with pilasters, a frieze, and a cornice. The left shop front includes a recessed central door with ornate console brackets. The main entrance door features two fully glazed leaves, and the wide doorway has a segmental brick arch with a blank fanlight above.
Inside, much of the 18th and early 19th-century framing has been exposed, although some sections have been replaced with 20th-century brick infill. The south end wall includes a section of 17th-century framing with original wattle-and-daub infill. The roof was raised in the early 19th century.
