Description

33 St John's Street is a house that has been divided into three flats. It has a core from the 17th century, with extensions from the 18th century and early 20th century. The building features a mix of timber framing and brick, with a pebbledash exterior and mock timbering. The roof is covered with plain tiles and has two gables facing the street, one of which is a mansard.

The house is two storeys tall with attics. The mansard gable has a projecting cross window supported by three ornate brackets. The upper storey has two slightly projecting cross windows, while the ground storey features a three-light window on the left and a cross window on the right, both set in heavy flush frames. There is a small open gabled porch roof over the central doorway, which is supported by timber columns, leading to a plank door.

Above the ground storey, there is a timber band carved with a vine motif, dated 1630, which originally served as a fascia board covering a jetty but is not in its original position. Bands of Jacobean ornament are present at the tie-beam and collar level on the gables, but these are also not in situ. The Victorian pierced and fluted bargeboards on the gables have been reused.

Inside, the right side of the house retains a fragmentary 17th-century core, with the line of the lower wallplate and tie visible in the upper room. This side was raised and given a mansard roof in the 18th century. The left side appears to be an extension from the same period as the facade and lacks any notable decoration or features of interest.
