Description

The Fennell Memorial Homes, also known as the Quaker Cottages, are a group of three purpose-built flats located at 57, 58, and 59 St Andrew's Street North in Bury St Edmunds. Constructed around 1875, these homes were funded by money inherited by a Mrs. Hare from a Quaker brother and sister named Fennell, intended for impoverished Quaker women who would support the work of the Friends. They were later used as police housing.

The buildings are made of red brick with white brick dressings and feature slate roofs. They are two storeys tall and have one internal and two end chimney-stacks with corbelled tops. The design includes projecting gabled wings at both the north and south ends, adorned with bargeboards supported by arched braces and bracketing, and each apex features an ornate oculus.

Across the upper front, there are six main windows, all sashes with a single vertical glazing-bar set in segmental-arched openings. The wings contain single windows flanked by small additional casements. On the ground floor, the wings have square projecting bays with sloping slate roofs and 3-light windows of the mullion-and-transom type, along with small side lights. The centre features two larger sash windows similar to those above.

Entrances to the two ground floor flats are located in small porches with single pitch roofs on the inner sides of the wings. A flight of outside stairs on the outer side of each gable leads to an upper porch entry with a single-pitch roof for each of the upper flats. The interior has not been inspected.
