Description

St John's Hall, originally St John's Infant School, was built in 1842 and is now used as a hall for St John's Church. Designed by William Ranger, it features white brick with stone dressings and slate roofs adorned with ornate red ridge tiles. The building is a single storey with an open interior that reaches up to the roof, showcasing a version of Victorian Early English style with an irregular form.

The original windows are narrow, single-light, and pointed-headed, each with arched stone hood-moulds. The west gable features a distinctive 3-light window with heavy plate tracery, a 4-centred hood-mould above it, and a circular window in the same style at the apex. An ornate gabled porch provides the entrance on the left side. The rear range, facing west, has flat pilasters between the windows and a gabled porch with an ornate stone doorway, along with three windows above and one on each side at a lower level.

On the south side, there are two similar but not identical gables; the southwest gable is part of a later range that fills the angle between the original south and west ranges. This later addition features three lancet-type windows in the gable end and a circular window with radiating glazing-bars at the apex. The west side has paired lancets and a brick dentil cornice. Inside, the hall retains its original pointed doors and doorways, with open timber roofs still visible in parts of the building.
