Description

11 West Street is a house and archway dating from the early 19th century. It is constructed from coursed limestone rubble, topped with a pantile roof and featuring brick stacks at the gable ends. The building has a double-depth plan and stands two storeys tall with a two-window range.

The exterior includes gauged flat stone arches above three-light casements with glazing bars, with the ground-floor right window being taller. There are steps leading up to the central door, which is set in a casement-moulded architrave. This six-panel door is glazed at the top with fleur-de-lys obscured glass and features a classical female head knocker. To the left of the door, there is a wide segmental brick arch that leads to a carriageway, elevated because the door is above street level. The arch is painted with the words: "JG HOARE. COACHBUILDER. WHEELWRIGHT. CARPENTER. BLACK & BRIGHT. SMITH. LOCKS, OF ALL KINDS REPAIRED." There are also remnants of fixings for a hanging sign.

The raised forecourt is enclosed by spearhead railings that curve slightly to the right, with a small gate providing access. The elaborate double gates to the archway are made of late 19th-century cast iron, each featuring four large fleur-de-lys in circles on the central horizontal rail, with small scrolls above. The interior was not inspected.
