Description

The building is a road archway and footbridge, which includes offices forming the southern part of the block on the east side of the archway. It dates from the late 18th century to early 19th century, with the road archway believed to have been constructed in the 1790s. The structure is made of ashlar and stands two storeys tall with a slate roof. It features a large segmental arch for a double carriageway across the main road, flanked by round-headed pedestrian archways. The western wall between the archways includes a drinking fountain.

On the first floor, there are five casement windows, each with three lights and glazing bars, along with gun embrasures that overlook the roadway, thought to have been installed for protection against potential attacks by the Luddites. The west side of the building is advanced and has three storeys with additional casement windows. A footbridge or gangway extends along the roadside to the north, made of ashlar with a segmental arch to the road that is now blocked. The outer side features a tall parapet, while the inner side has a shorter one.

To the south of the archway, there is a three-storey building with stone construction, which includes round corner turrets at the southern corners, an eaves band, a plain frieze, a cornice, and a blocking course, along with bands between the storeys. The windows consist of two and three light casements with mullions, and the upper windows have transoms, with the top floor windows being the largest.
