Description
East Mill is a Grade II listed building constructed in 1912. It is similar to the later iron-framed mills of Lancashire and serves as a good example of this architectural type. The mill is built overhand using red brick with stone dressings and has a rectangular plan that includes a rear eastern wing and a single-storey section across part of the western facade, along with corner towers. The southwestern tower is larger and features a stone belvedere with the name and date displayed on the front. All towers are topped with stone balustraded parapets. The mill is built over earlier water channels that were used for wheels and has seven storeys. The top floor showcases arcaded windows with stone archivolts and keys, along with glazing bars and hopper opening lights, all set within stepped recessed brick arches. The rear elevation faces the River Gardens and Matlock Road and includes small semi-circular balconies that connect the corner towers to the main body of the mill on several floors. East Mill is a prominent landmark visible from many near and distant viewpoints in the town.
