Description
North Mill, built in 1803-1804 by the Strutts and designed by William Strutt, is the earliest example of a completely iron-framed mill in the world, and it remains the most intact example of this construction type. It was built to replace an earlier mill that was destroyed by fire. The mill features a T-shaped plan, with a lower part made of ashlar and red brick above. It has a slate roof with coped gable ends and stands five storeys tall. There are fifteen windows, generally with three lights each and cambered head linings. The attic floor, which was formerly used as a school for children working in the mill, has a lunette in the western gable end facing the street. Inside, the mill has vaulted construction and a wheel pit below. The design reflects the Strutts' innovative approach to construction, aimed at reducing fire hazards and creating light and airy working conditions.
