Description

18 and 20 Bridge Foot is an early to mid-19th century red brick house located prominently next to Belper Bridge. It features a slate roof and stands two storeys high with four sash windows that have cambered head linings. The northern end of the building is slightly lower than the rest. This structure was formerly known as The Cottage Hospital, as indicated in the 1879 Ordnance Survey and Bulmer's 1895 publication. The hospital was supported by the Strutts and provided either indoor or outdoor relief to the elderly and sick residents of Belper, managed by a sister from the Convent of St Laurence.
