Description

'Corner House' is a prominent building located at the western corner of High Street and Market Street. This house dates from the 18th and 19th centuries and later became a temperance hotel in the late 19th century.

The building stands three storeys high and is finished in stucco, topped with a hipped slate roof. It features four bays facing Market Street and two bays on High Street. A heavy Italianate bracketed cornice adorns the top of the structure. The upper floor windows are nine-pane hornless sashes with shallow moulded architraves and stone sills. The first floor windows have moulded architraves with cornices and twelve-pane hornless sash glazing.

On the ground floor, the corner of the building has a late 19th-century shopfront. This includes a double-leaf door that is part-glazed, with a rectangular overlight above. To the right on High Street is a single shop window, while to the left on Market Street is a double shop window. The shopfront features panelled stall risers and is articulated by pilasters that support volutes and gabled fascia tabernacles, with fascia boards above that have a dentil cornice. To the left of the shopfront on Market Street is an entrance doorway with a bracketed hood. Next to this doorway is a tripartite window, which has a central twelve-pane sash flanked by narrow sashes, topped with a deep cornice.

The building has group value within its context.
