Description

5, Fore Street is a former hotel, now two shops, built in 1834 and subsequently altered. Constructed of Ham Hill stone for the shop front, with stucco to the first and second floors, it features a Cornish slate roof with stone copings. The building has a double-depth plan and stands three storeys high, with a four-window range. The shop front is of 20th-century origin. The first and second floors contain two/two-pane sash windows within flat arched frames, each with keystones that die into platbands. A box gutter is supported by brackets. There is a brick stack to the left gable end and a ridge stack to the right of centre. Stepped copings define the gable ends, and a medieval carved stone finial is located on the right gable.

The interior includes a 20th-century shop and first floor. A staircase at the rear left corner, leading from the second to the third floor, is open-well and open-string, with plain balusters and a swept mahogany rail, situated within an oval hall featuring a round-arched sash window. A passage with two round arches runs centrally on the third floor, running parallel to the front facade. Some early 19th-century fireplaces remain on the third floor.

The building was originally built as the Crown Hotel in 1834.
