Description
The Former National Westminster Bank, located at No 7 Fore Street in Chard, is a building dating from around 1820. Originally two houses, it has been converted into commercial premises with flats above. The building is constructed from Ham Hill stone ashlar, with an unseen roof and brick stacks. It features a double-depth plan and is designed in a Classical style.
The façade consists of three storeys and a four-window range. The ground floor displays chamfered rustication, with 20th-century six-panel doors on either side, each topped with semi-circular fanlights; the left door has been altered. The doors are set within round arches, while later 19th-century one-over-one pane sashes above have flat arches, rusticated voussoirs, and a platband above. The first and second floors each have four two-over-two pane sashes with keystones, with the first-floor sashes integrated into the platband above. A moulded cornice and a parapet with recessed panels are present above the windows.
The upper floors of the interior have not been inspected.
