Description
4 Combe Street is a house dating from the early 19th century, likely with earlier origins, located at a right angle to Combe Street in Chard. The south facade features painted render and ashlar, while the rear is constructed of rubblestone. The building has a crested slate roof with brick stacks, hipped to the left, and a pantile roof on the lean-to. It has an L-shaped plan with two rooms deep at the front. The house is two storeys high and has a symmetrical three-window range, with two-light casements on the first floor and French windows flanking a door and porch added around 1970. Below the gutter is a moulded cornice, and to the right of the facade is a semicircular-arched carriage entrance. The rear wing, which faces Combe Street, has a 1/1-pane sash window on the ground floor right and a two-light casement above a door from around 1960 on the left. This wing has a hipped roof to the north, topped with a finial, and a small three-light casement above the pantiled lean-to.
Attached to the left of the facade is a narrow strip of rubblestone wall with stone coping that rises to about 2 meters. Cast-iron railings on a stone plinth extend forward from this wall.
