Description

Whatley Farmhouse is a detached farmhouse, possibly dating back to the 17th century, and has undergone modifications since. The exterior is local stone, rendered and colourwashed, with a corrugated asbestos cement roof that replaced a thatched roof. A brick chimney stack sits on a stone base. The south-facing elevation has five bays, with the first bay being a long outbuilding. Most windows are 3-light casements of varying sizes and patterns, with the upper window in the third bay being 2-light, featuring a rectangular leaded light and an iron-framed opening light. A similar window design is present in the upper bays four and five, while the lower bay five window has two leaded lights and an iron-framed opening light. The lower bay one window has internal vertical iron bars. A stable-type door is set into a heavy frame to the right of bay one, and a 19th-century part-glazed door in a plain opening is located between the lower bays three and four. The east gable features a chimney stack projecting approximately one metre, without offsets. An adjacent lean-to may have housed a former oven. The interior was not inspected. Attached to the west gable is a long barn and other outbuildings, featuring a triple-angle clay tiled roof with a sawtooth ridge, stepped coped gables, a loft door in the west gable, and full-height doors within a brick-lined opening in bay two. A stone stairway connects the barn to a first-floor doorway abutting the west gable of the farmhouse.
