Description
Sheephouse Farmhouse is a detached farmhouse dating from the mid to late 18th century. It is constructed of ham stone, appearing close to ashlar, with a thatched roof between coped gables and brick chimney stacks. The original design was an 'L' shape, comprising four bays over two storeys. A string course runs between the floors. The windows are plain mullioned, with slight beading and shallow architraves. Most windows are two-light, except for the three-light windows in the lower bays. The window in the lower bay three has been blocked, and the window in the lower bay two has been removed entirely. All windows have horizontal-bar inserts with iron-framed opening lights secured with external curl stays. A six-panel door, in a matching architrave and with a pediment hood above, is located between the lower bays two and three. Above the door are remnants of a former window. To the left of bay one is a blocking that may indicate a former throughway; a visible straight joint is on the right side of bay four. The end gables are plain. A matching thatched wing projects from the southwest corner, featuring a brick chimney stack and early 20th-century casement windows on the west side. Small-pane casements and a lean-to extend on the east side, with a boarded door at a mezzanine level towards the south end. The interior is not recorded in detail, but it is believed to have a staircase with turned balusters.
