Description
The Old Prebendal House is a former vicarage, now a private house, built in the 17th century and modified in the 19th century. It is constructed of Ham stone ashlar and features a Welsh slate roof with plain overhung gables and stone end chimney stacks. The building has a 'T'-plan layout, is two storeys high with an attic, and has a symmetrical facade with three bays.
The exterior includes a plinth and ovolo-mould mullioned windows set in wave-mould recesses. The lower bay features a 4-light window with labels, while the upper bay has a 3-light window with flat lintel-heads on the outer bays, along with a 19th-century 2-light chamfered mullioned window in the upper bay. There is a 19th-century door in the lower bay, protected by an open timber porch, above which is the water table for an earlier porch.
On the west gable, there are chamfer-mullioned windows at each level: a 4-light window on the ground floor, a 3-light window on the first floor, and a 2-light window in the attic, all of which are now blind. The east gable has blocked 3-light windows on the ground and first floors, with signs of a former attic window. The rear elevation includes another 4-light mullioned window, and the rear extension features a window made from a former cambered-arched doorframe.
Internally, the house has a plan of three rooms, with the rear extension serving as the kitchen. This area includes a cambered-arched fireplace in the north gable wall and an oven alongside, along with a curing chamber. Other rooms have been adapted with 19th-century fireplaces behind blocked windows. The unusual plan is clearly described in a Glebe Terrier from 1636, making it identifiable in historical records.
