Description
This listing describes a group of three chest tombs located in the churchyard, between one and three metres south of the southwest corner of the Church of St Michael.
The first tomb, an unidentified monument, is situated about one metre south. It dates from the late 17th century to early 18th century and is made of Ham stone. It features a moulded plinth with wave-mould panels on each end and two on the flanks, fluted pilasters on the sides, and moulded coving on the shallow hipped top. There are traces of an inscription on the north side, which is not legible but may belong to the Hutchins family.
The second tomb, identified as the Hutchins monument, is located about two metres south and dates from the late 17th century. Also made of Ham stone, its base is buried, and it has plain flanks with semi-circular arched panels on the ends that include keystones, dentils, and imposts. It has cyma-recta coving on a heavy flat top and commemorates ______ Hutchins, who died in 1691, along with others.
The third tomb, another Hutchins monument, is about three metres south and dates from the 17th century. It is made of Ham stone, with its base buried, and features plain sides and flanks. It also has cyma-reta coving on a heavy flat top and commemorates Elizabeth, the wife of John Hutchins, who died in 16__, along with others.
