Description
This milestone, located about 140 metres south-west of Eastham's Gate Farmhouse, is likely from the 18th century. It is made of Ham stone and measures approximately 360 millimetres wide, 180 millimetres thick, and 750 millimetres high, featuring a rounded top. The milestone has incised and painted lettering that reads '--XXI/MLs From/LONDON/VIII/From Yeovil/I/To Crewkerne/XLIX/From Sarum'. It is part of the 1675 Ogilby route from London to Exeter. The road was turnpiked by the Chard Trust in 1753 and later transferred to the Crewkerne Trust in 1825. The mention of Crewkerne suggests that this milestone predates the Trust system established in 1825.
