Description

The Lodge to Townsend Cemetery, built around 1874, is a cemetery lodge located on Yeovil Road in Crewkerne. It is constructed from limestone rubble with Ham Hill stone dressings and features a crested slate roof. The building has a T-shaped plan with a gable that steps forward to the right.

Designed in the Tudor Revival style, the lodge stands two storeys high. All windows are fitted with stone mullions and small panes. The top arm of the T has a gabled front, showcasing a rusticated course above a pointed relieving arch, which frames a cusped circular window, with a cross-window situated below it. The ground floor features a two-sided bay with stone jambs and an angled roof. To the left, at the angle of the T, there is a lean-to porch supported by fretted brackets, covering a four-panel door that has glazed, trefoil-headed panels at the top. Above this door is a small two-light casement window beneath a raised roof. Adjacent to this is a three-light casement window with a transom, set under a shallow relieving arch. The right side of the building includes a three-light window on the first floor of a central gable that is slightly stepped forward, with a two-light window below it; to the left on the ground floor is another two-light window, while the right side features a single-light window with a transom and relieving arch.

Inside, the main room to the right contains a Ham Hill stone fireplace in a Gothic style, complete with a pointed arch and trefoils in the spandrels, along with a cast-iron grate and a reeded, coved cornice. The staircase is notable for its square, moulded newel post, stick balusters, and diagonal panelling below. This lodge is described as "unusually ambitious" and is thoughtfully designed for its period.
