Description
The entrance gates, gate piers, walls, and railings to Townsend Cemetery in Crewkerne were built around 1874. They are constructed from limestone rubble, Ham Hill stone ashlar, and cast iron. A revetment wall surrounds the garden of the lodge to the north and curves around to the gates on the west side. This wall features recessed panels with Ham Hill stone plinth capping at both the base and the top. To the right, there is a castellated rubblestone boundary wall extending approximately 60 meters. For about 55 meters, a low boundary wall with plinth capping separates a footpath from the drive and supports railings made of three horizontal spiked rails, with the lower rails set into the plinth and the upper rail featuring spikes above and below. The four substantial gate piers have steep, stepped pyramidal tops with crocketed finials, stiff-leaf cornices, and stepped-back corners with inset colonnettes. The gates consist of single gates on the sides and double gates in the center, featuring five horizontal bars, long and short railings at the base, a diagonal cross pattern in the center, and trefoil-type finials along the tops. This structure is included for its group value.
