Description

This milestone is located against the south-west corner of the Town Hall on High Street in Ilchester. It is possibly from the 18th century and made of ham stone, measuring about 400 millimeters wide, 100 millimeters thick, and one meter high, with a triangular top. The milestone features incised lettering that reads "MILES TO/LONDON 127/BRISTOL 35/BATH 33/WELLS 18/TAUNTON 24/YEOVIL 5". It may have been erected by the Ilchester Trust, which was founded in 1753, as the starting point for measuring mileages on their toll roads.
